Six years ago I attended Hull Bach Choir's performance of the St Matthew Passion one Saturday night in March, followed the very next day by hearing the same work at Birmingham's Symphony Hall with the CBSO and chorus, Simon Rattle conducting, and Mark Padmore singing Evangelist from memory - pretty amazing, but there were aspects of the Hull Bach Choir's performance I enjoyed more. For them, it was such a special occasion which they had all worked towards for months.
Last Saturday they returned to the St Matthew and I again had the pleasure of supplying soloists - who were much appreciated: Di Ford, wife of the conductor Tony Ford, wrote to me to say...
"Matthew Minter (Evangelist) was outstanding, every word being clear to tell the story.
Ruth Holton, as ever, sang with beautiful clarity.
Felix Kemp, who had a lot to do, is clearly a young singer to look out for - I hope we can have him again.
Daniel Auchincloss: I have never heard the tenor aria "Endure" so well sung - it so often sounds strangulated!
And as for Julian who was not feeling very well, he was excellent. I hope he too will come again when he is on top form.
All in all, an excellent line-up - a real pleasure to work with."
